The lecture Critical Cases in Polish Art after 1989 will concern the artistic tendencies after the fall of the communist regime in Poland, especially the so-called “critical art” of the 1990s. The strategies of the new art included issues suppressed or simply absent before the transformation, such as the problem of history, Holocaust, gender politics, body and sexuality, otherness, the role of the Catholic church in Poland etc. The lecture will focus on specific works by Polish artists such as Katarzyna Kozyra, Zbigniew Libera or but also foreigners, e.g. Maurizio Cattellan, which generated public debates and highlighted social and cultural tensions in Polish democracy under construction.
How important is research in practice?
